PHILLIPS LINEAGE IN SOUTH CAROLINA FROM 1786 TO PRESENT.

The most distant documented Phillips of my family is Robert (Robin) PHILLIPS. Born in Lancaster County, SC, 3 Jan 1786, he lived all his life in Lancaster County, SC. He married Susannah DEASON in SC. Susannah was the daughter of Edmund Riley DEASON, Sr. and Hester CATO.

Robert (Robin) PHILLIPS died 31 Mar 1861. Susannah DEASON PHILLIPS died 1872.

Their union produced sixteen children. I have listed below the names of their children with their spouses. I have some data on the their children and grandchildren. I am interested in obtaining more personal data for all their children and their descendents.

Robert (Robin) PHILLIPS had a half-brother, Joel PHILLIPS, who lived in Lancaster County, according to state documents. In a lawsuit in SC, documents show Robert, along with his son Davis Collins PHILLIPS, testified for their brother and uncle, Joel PHILLIPS.

An interesting note is that Joel PHILLIPS (born 1794 in Lancaster County, SC), is a half-brother to Robert. Was one of the females listed in 1790 Census Robert's mother, or Joel's mother?

US CENSUS: In trying to establish Robert's parents, there are not many documents for this time still existing. The first and foremost document checked is the US CENSUS. Below I have a summary of PHILLIPS families in the Lancaster, Kershaw and Chesterfield area.

All the above participates are interested in determining who is their most distant ancestor. Many inquiries and much time has been devoted to that effort. If you have knowledge of any the persons above, please contact the DNA participate or me as mentioned on the last page.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Many sources on the Internet and published data state that Robert "Robin" PHILLIPS was the son of James PHILLIPS and Susan CREIGHTON. DNA tests have proven this is NOT TRUE! Please be advised that sources and data must be verified and documented.

PHILLIPS DNA Project    www.familytreedna.com/public/phillips  has established genetic links for
DNA Group 10  [Haplo-group R1b1] from SC, NC, and VA which seem to have a focal point of Chatham County, NC between 1750-1780. The administrator for this site is Nancy Kiser nancy_kiser@hotmail.com

My genetic links are listed as part of the DNA Group 10 which has shown to be related to eight lines at the 37-y marker matches, as of this writing. One of the interesting notes from the DNA testing is "the 24/10 combination of marker 390 and 391 is very common in Scotland and Northern Ireland".

MY MOST RECENT THEORY:

The grand-daughter of William Burrell Phillips,Lucy Dees WILLIAMS, once told me, when asked "where did our family come from?". Her answer was "From Virginia....Robert Phillips and two brothers went to Greensborough, prior to Robert leaving his brothers there and going to Lancaster County, SC."
Matching DNA y-markers seem to support what she said.

William Lindsey says his ancestor's sister married a Robert PHILLIPS, and was mentioned by his father-in-law's will. They came from VIRGINIA. Later they moved into Chatham County, NC. But life was not as kind as the land was. The governement there became oppressive and corrupt. Life became so difficult from the greed of the Sheriffs who collected taxes (only in specie) and other appointed officers of the courts and the Royal Governor, that the Regulator movement was founded. Many of the early settlers were involved or symapthic to them.

I believe the PHILLIPS settlers were sympathic to the Regulator movement, and some may have been active during the time of the battle. The crisis came to a head on 16 May 1771 in the Battle of Alamance, the first battle for American freedom and the first battle of the American Revolution. The PHILLIPS settlers were soon to make decisions: (1) stay and defend what they had built, and continue to live with what resources they could; (2) move on to new lands, south into South Carolina, west into what has become Tennessee, and northwest back into Virginia (what later would be known as West Virginia) and Kentucky.

I believe the families who left, departed for their own individual reasons. Chances of ever seeing their blood relations again was a fact of finality, just as when the first immigrants left from Wales, Ireland, or Scotland. It was a bold decision!!

RECENT DISCOVERY
C. Francis PHILLIPS (1865-1921) Lancaster County, SC; son of Peter PHILLIPS (1840- ?) Lancaster County, SC; grandson of Solomon PHILLIPS (1784 - 1858 FL); great-grandson of Joel PHILLIPS (1750 NC - 1841)

THEORY: The Christian or given name Joel is repeated in most every generation by some PHILLIPS families. It almost appears to be a perpetual rememberance for the Patriarch who came to America, maybe further back. My 'Robert PHILLIPS' had a half brother named Joel, he named one of his sons, Joel. There is a distant connection between C. Francis PHILLIPS, and Robert's son Joel. Joel is found in many other families also. Joel PHILLIPS (1750-1841) may have been one of several family members. (see Lucy Dees WILLIAMS reference "three brothers"). Robert is also a significant name carried in several generations. Sometimes confusing, sometimes it is the obivious link.
