Fortunately, I saved all my early correspondence with older family members, who have long passed away to their reward. Many of those letters have helped establish a base from which to work. I have preserved them in binders for reference.
The US CENSUS's (1790-1930) are very rich as a research tool. So of the data, particularly the spelling of names, may be skewed, but generally is good source to trace backwards and forward movements of families within an area, or between states. In addition to the Census list, there are Slave Schedules listing owners for 1850 and 1860. Agricultural Schedules for 1850, 1860, and 1870 provide a view into the past of how those ancestors lived.
Another resource I use is the collective interest and quarterly magazines of local Genealogical Societies. I am a member of the following Genealogy Societies. They have good sources for those researching families in the areas of the Carolinas where early pioneers and settlers established their early homes. Local libraries are also a great resource.

A new resource for me is the recent discovery of a CD for the data on the CLYBURN families in the Carolinas. Put on CD due to the complex, volumious data, it is a wealth of data for many families in the Lancaster, Kershaw and surrounding areas of South Carolina.
